The Joy of NOT Being Known

by Scott Noelle

In the last post we connected with the joy of being known. However, not being known can be a good thing, too. It gives you space to re-create yourself every now and then.

A parent’s “knowing” can have the unintended effect of suppressing growth and learning: “Don’t give my son any broccoli — he hates it!” Who’s to say he won’t develop a taste for broccoli today?

If you find yourself using labels (e.g., “fussy eater”) you definitely “know” too much about your child!
