NOTE: I recently posted the following information in the exclusive forums of the PATH Program, and several PATH members reported profound and immediate results after watching the videos and applying the information with their young children. I'm posting a copy here in hopes that you might receive the same benefits of increased parent-child connection and harmony.

It's just one example of the practical support and information you get access to, every day, when you become a member.

How to Play the Original Way

One of my favorite books to recommend to parents is Playing By Heart, by O. Fred Donaldson. Fred's claim to fame is that he learned the deeper meaning of play by actually playing with wild animals, including wolves, bears, lions, and dolphins. He also learned that wild humans (a.k.a. children) naturally play the same way as any other mammal until they're taught otherwise by domesticated humans (mostly adults).

He calls it original play, and it's distinctly different from what he calls "cultural play" or "contest play," which is the way most members of our culture learn to play....

Until today I had only imagined what original play looks like, but I just found a 28-minute video documentary of Fred teaching an Original Play workshop to a group of parents and their children. (The first five minutes illustrates a more conventional style of parent-child play, then it shifts to the workshop.) Accessing the 3-part video is a bit tricky:

1. Go to www.ptvn.org/page.aspx?id=305327

2. Click on "Original Play" then click on another "Original Play" under the thumbnail image of the video.

3. Finally, click on "Original Play VIDEO Part ONE".

4. When Part One is over, click "[X] Close" and go to Part Two, etc.

Alternatively, you can right-click the following links and download/save the video files (about 35MB each) to your computer, then play the files with a media player that can play Flash videos...

Part One  |  Part Two  |  Part Three
